Laying Fibre Optic Cables

Tulloch Developments is ideally placed to carry out the fast, efficient installation of fibre optic cable. We have experience in laying such cable over land, whether in deep peat or under major roads, for Faroese Telecom and Shetland Telecom.

The Micro trenching technology we use enables us to lay cable much more quickly than would be possible using conventional open trenching. We’re able to undertake projects anywhere in the UK.

Our first contract was worth £285,000 and was undertaken in 2007 for Faroese Telecom, whose Faroe-Shetland subsea cable passes through Shetland.  We assisted with landing of the cable on the shore at Banff, Sandwick and Maywick. See our project page for more details.

More recently, during 2011, we installed the fibre optic cable that connects Shetland Telecom’s hub in Lerwick with the Sandwick landfall of the Faroese cable.  The cable was laid under the public road over a distance of approximately 20km.  The contract value was £450,000.  Using a specially-purchased Ditch Witch cutter and tractor, we cut a 100mm x 20mm slot in the carriageway, laid the cable and reinstated the road surface. More details can be found on this project's page.
